Thank you for the wonderful attention to Second City in the February 23, 2001, issue. However, I would like to clarify a few items in the Culture Club section of that issue: Mr. Neumann writes that our Toronto ensemble contains an ideal template of “Asians, Latinos, blacks, and whites.” Unfortunately, this has never been the case and it would be dishonest on our part to suggest it. What I did say to Mr. Neumann was that the city of Toronto has pursued a “multiculturalism” agenda that has created an environment that should be a template for more diversity in the arts. Actually, the Toronto improv community has not embraced this diversity as strongly as other areas of entertainment, such as the ballet or even local television. Our outreach efforts exist at all Second City theaters, but we have a long way to go and do not want to suggest otherwise.
Thank you again for taking an interest in the Second City. We are extremely proud of our work, but do not want to miscommunicate our efforts.
